Allin Khan increased the Labour majority
The A&E doctor, who increased the Labour majority, used her acceptance speech to pay tribute to Mrs Cox, who was killed in her Batley and Spen constituency on Thursday.
She said Mrs Cox was a “proud and passionate campaigner who will be desperately missed”. She added: “My thoughts and prayers are with Jo’s husband and her children. “Jo’s death reminds us that our democracy is precious but fragile. We must never forget to cherish it. “Thousands of people voted today and we are all here in recognition of our democratic values.”
Dr Allin-Khan increased Labour’s majority to 6,357 over the Conservatives, up from the 2,842 secured by her predecessor in the general election last year. This seat was won by Sadiq Khan now the London Mayor, after winning the mayoral election. The Labour party under Corbyn has increased its vote bank in recent period. The left wing leader of the Labour Party has been able to attract a new layer of young people. The right wing Blairite MPs and politicians are opposing Corbyn for being Socialist and anti- austerity.
Her main rival for the seat was Tory Dan Watkins, who unsuccessfully stood against Mr Khan in the general election last year. Turnout in the by-election was 42.5%, Wandsworth Council said.
